Gratia, the wife of Natale de Actono: Sciacca, 1489
Subject
The topic of the resource
Gratia, the wife of Natale de Actono, daughter of Chaym Sala
Description
An account of the resource
Gratia testates while pregnant, and her will follows immediately on the heels of a document in which her father "emancipates" her. The child with whom Gratia is currently pregnant is named her universal heir. It seems that, should the child not survive, her father Chaym Sala would be the universal heir.
Gratia leaves oil for the synagogue.
As if she forgot earlier, the last entry leaves her husband an article of clothing, a cape and hood.
The witnesses here are Christian.

Gemma, widow of Manuele di Bonaiuto da Camerino: Florence, 1499
Subject
The topic of the resource
Gemma, the daughter of Salomone di Aliuccio Fano and his wife Brunetta, widow of Manuele di Bonaiuto da Camerino
Description
An account of the resource
Gemma's mother Brunetta's will (Poggibonsi, 1473) is also part of this collection. A good deal about this family and this will's larger context is known. See Borgolotto and Garruto, "Testamenti femminili toscani," 69-72. Gemma's husband came from a well-known Roman Jewish family, and was a very important moneylender active in Florence. The couple seems to have had no children. Gemma had been named as her husband's heir, unless she chose to remarry, which she did not do. She had also been left a good deal of money that had been invested in various loan banks, leaving her responsible to administer a very large set of assets.
Gemma's will was made in her home in Florence.
She named as her universal heirs those who her husband had named to succeed her should she have gotten remarried: Salomone and Angelo di Abramo di San Miniato, brothers from a well-known Tuscan Jewish family. She says that she should be married in the cemetery in the neighborhood of San Miniato (where her husband Manuele had been buried).
Gemma left a series of bequests to members of her family of origin. She left 150 florins to her nephews Consiglio and Bonaventura, the sons of her brother Elia. She also left them goods stored in two chests which were located in the third room of her house. They were also ordered within two years of Gemma's death to use 20 florins to pay for a teacher to teach Jewish boys.
As a fulfillment of a mandate from her husband's will, Gemma also left 100 florins for Manuele, the son of her late brother Daniele. She also left Manuele another 10 florins, which should come from the sale of the household goods of her house in Florence.
She also left a house and garden in the neighborhood of San Giovanni Val d'Arno to her universal heirs and their father Abramo, in payment for a debt of 40 florins she owed them. If her heirs decided to sell the garden, she conditioned, they had to use the profits to maintain the synagogue that her husband had founded in the neighborhood of San Giovanni Val d'Arno. If they didn't want to sell the garden, they were ordered to give 40 florins to the oratory of San Giovanni Valdarno.

Dolce, wife of Jacob di Consiglio da Toscanella, former wife of Jacob di Salomone
Description
An account of the resource
Dolce made her will in her home in Siena, which also functioned as the bank run by her current (second) husband, Jacob di Consiglio da Toscanella. Her husband was present at the testation, and gave his permission for her to make the will.
Dolce asked to be buried in Siena. Then she left 100 florins to pious causes.
She named her only son, Manuele (with her first husband) as her universal heir. She also left him 500 florins, the amount of money she had invested in a Florentine pawnshop. She entrusts the annuities of this invested capital to her executors. The profits accrued from the 500 florins should be used to pay for Manuel's upkeep until he turned twenty-five years old.
Should Manuel die before reaching maturity, the legacy would be divided evenly among all of her daughters. Otherwise, the daughters each received 50 florins from their mother, beyond their dowries. Dolce explicitly orders that the daughters be allowed to manage their bequests without any intervention from their husbands.
She also leaves to four of her daughters -- Anna, Rosa, Susanna, and Gentile -- what is left in her "cassa," including money, jewels, and clothing. She does not include her daughter Perla in this bequest.

Sannola, daughter of the late Abramo, widow of Salomone di Matassia: Florence, 1454
Subject
The topic of the resource
Sannola, called Dolcetta, daughter of the late Abramo di Aliuccio da Orvieto, widow of Salomone di Matassia da Perugia
Description
An account of the resource
This Latin will exists in two copies in the registers of one Christian notary in Florence, the notary Gualtieri di ser Lorenzo da Ghiacceto.
Sannola, known as Dolcetta, was the mother of the well-known Florentine moneylender Jacob, son of Salomone di Matassia da Perugia, as well as another son David. Her third son, Samuele, predeceased her, but left her a grandson, Isaac. She also had three living daughters. Sarucca, Anna, and Gentile, with Anna living in Ferrara and Gentile in Siena. She also had a daughter named Rosa who predeceased her. This family, identified as "da Perugia," is connected to Senna, whose will is also part of this collection.
Sannola leaves 25 florins each to her living sons Jacob and David, and to her grandson Isaac. She also orders that Isaac be allowed to remain in the house belonging to his uncles (Jacob and David) as long as he wants, and that he have rights to food and clothing for himself and his family. She leaves to her two married daughters, Sarucca and Anna, 5 gold florins each. Her late daughter Rosa had two sons, Salomone and Emanuele, and each of those two are left 5 gold florins. She does not leave anything to her daughter Gentile, but she does leave Gentile's children 5 gold florins each. They are named Consiglio, Angelo, Isaac, and Abramo.
Sannola names as her universal heirs Emanuele, the son of David, as well as other male sons potentially born in the future to Jacob. In the case that there is a lack of male heirs when it comes time to divide her estate, she names her sons' and grandson's daughters as heirs. She also specifies that the inheritance left to Emanuele not be able to be touched by his father David. She does not include her grandson Isaac as a universal heir.
Other extant documents give a good deal of corroborating and contextualizing data about Sannola and her family. See Borgolotto and Garruto (see below), p. 64-65.

Senna, daughter of the late Abramo, widow of Elia: Florence, 1440
Subject
The topic of the resource
Senna, daughter of the late Abramo di maestro Emanuele, widow of maestro Elia.
Description
An account of the resource
Senna's will exists in two copies from the same notary, and is the oldest known surviving Jewish woman's will from fifteenth-century Florence.
Senna, a widow, belonged to a family identified as "da Perugia." At the time of her testating, she lived in Florence. Senna did not seem to have children, or at least, no offspring are mentioned in the will, suggesting that any children that may have been born were no longer alive.
Senna names three males as her universal heirs: Jacob son of the late Salomone di Matassia da Perugia (a well-known Florentine Jewish moneylender), his brother David, and their nephew Isaac, son of Samuel. The men are likely Senna's relatives, but certainly identified as "da Perugia."
Senna leaves 25 gold florins to the poor, and assigns the task of distribution to Jacob.
As was then a strong custom for all residents in Florence, she left in her will a pound for the new church of San Reparata, and another pound for the construction of the city walls.
She gave 2 gold florins to a woman living in Verona named Stellucia (called Sara), the daughter of the late Salomone di maestro Emanuele da Perugia. This seems to be her first cousin.

Subject
The topic of the resource
Brunetta, daughter of the late of Daniele di Vitale da Pisa, widow of Salomone da Cesena (or da Fano)
Description
An account of the resource
Brunetta lived in the Elsa river valley (Valdelsa) in a town called Poggibonsi. She had two sons, Elia and Daniele with her husband Salomone. Daniele seems to have died before Brunetta testated. (She also had two daughters, Rosa and Gemma, who did not receive bequests in this will). She was the sister of Dolce, whose will (Siena, 1462) is also in this collection.
She testated in her home, which was also the location of her family's pawnshop.
Only a copy of this will exists.
Brunetta notes that her late husband left her with a great deal of debt upon his death, and that they were resolved by the time of her testation, thanks to the successful business earnings of her son Elia. Elia is named the universal heir.
Elia is also mandated to pay out money to his late brother's son, Manuele, who is eight years old at the time Brunetta makes her will. When Manuele turns twenty-four, Elia has to pay out 200 gold florins, 150 in gold coin, and 50 in furniture and household goods. Until he is twenty-four, Elia is ordered to care for Manuele, giving him food and clothing, in his own home, at his own expense.

Description
An account of the resource
Stella is the widow of Farachio De Bulfarachio, also known as Nissim ben Shabbetai Abu-l Faraj, a Arab-Spanish rabbi.
In her will, the widow Stella names her son Jeremiah as her universal heir. She leaves to her daughter Channa, wife David de Siragusia, money for the dowry promised to her at the time of her marriage, as well as a quantity of mourning cloth. To Joseph de Siragusia, her grandson (Channa's son), she leaves a cloth hat. To Ventura, daughter of the late Sadech de Minichi, she bequeaths a blanket and a pair of sheets.
Most notably, Stella leaves "dominus" Guglielmo Moncata, her son, two tarì, but beyond this she explicitly denies him any other rights to inheritance. This Guglielmo Moncata is the famed Sicilian humanist born Samuel, who converted to Christianity around 1470, and is also known as Flavius Mithridates. Here, Stella uses the small bequest and explicit exclusion to air her discontent with her son.
The will is signed by three Christian witnesses and four Jewish witnesses.

An account of the resource
The widow Gaudiosa, sick in bed (as the boilerplate from Sicily has it), names her two sons Xibitella and Busacca as her universal heirs. She bequeaths clothing and textiles to her grandson Merdocay.
She also leaves a bed and its extensive bed-clothing to Stella, the daughter of the late Xua Summato, "pro eius maritagio" (as part of her dowry). If Stella were to die before marriage, however, Gaudiosa orders the same goods to be left to Stella's sister Channa.
Gaudiosa also leaves her own bed to her grandsons, the children of Xibitella. To Xibitella's wife, her daughter-in-law Ricca, some clothing.
Gaudiosa is also concerned about the children of her son Busacca, and orders that the goods that Busacca receives through his inheritance must be passed down to his sons Vita and Joxtiret, identified as Busacca's sons "from this present marriage."
The will is witnessed by seven witnesses, apparently all Jews.

Description
An account of the resource
Cassena's husband Gracianus de Vita is still alive when she testates. Her first concern is her burial, which is to be at the Jewish cemetery in Trapani. The choice to address burial first seems to be the preference of the notary Cirami, who also recorded the will of Stera, wife of Challuri de Challuri, found in this collection.
She then leaves her husband a cloak with hood, made of black Majorcan cloth, "for the reason of his good company." She does not, however, name her husband as universal heir. Rather, her daughter Cullina (still a minor) is made universal heir. Should Cullina die young or die without children, Cassena's father should become the universal heir instead. (This conditional section's language and spelling seem to be inflected with local dialect.)
Cassena names her father the guarantor/executor of the will.
Seven Christian men witnessed this will.

Description
An account of the resource
Stera, who had been widowed and then remarried to a still-living husband at the time of testation, first ordered that she be buried in the Jewish cemetery of Trapani. The concern with burial, and the choice to place it first, seems to be a preference of the Sicilian notary Cirami, who also recorded the will of Cassena, wife of Gracianus de Vito, in this collection.
She names her daughter Misuda (apparently a minor) her universal heir. If she dies young, Sictuna, the wife of Samuel Levi -- Stera's sister -- should take her place. If Sictuna dies, Sictuna's children should become Stera's universal heirs.
Stera is concerned in the will that her husband will lose his mental capacity and not be able to care for their young daughter. If this happens, she orders that her sister Sictuna become Misuda's guardian, and that Misuda move into Sictuna's house, and that Sictuna will be supported in this through the rent of one of the houses that Stera owns. She spends a good deal of the will setting up the circumstances for Misuda's continued care in such a case.
The Latin language and spelling of this will is highly inflected with local dialect, which is apparent in the other wills of the notary Cirami as well.

Bullara, a widow, records her will when she is sick.
She names her grandson Sadiolus Sieli her universal heir. She leaves bed-related goods to her granddaughter Luna. She also leaves other female loved ones clothing and textile goods.
Bullara records that she is owed six florins by one Cavino de Galiano, to whom she sold "bisacia" of sugar. She asks for that recovered money to be given as charity to the synagogue in Sacca for the sake of her soul (pro anima sua). She likewise leaves to the same synagogue oil, to be given by her heirs within a year of her death.
The witnesses of the wills are both Christians (two) and Jewish (five).

An account of the resource
The widow Channuna, like most Jewish women represented in this collection, testated while sick. As the common boilerplate from Sicily has it, she testated while lying in bed.
Channuna leaves her grandson Magalufus the house in which he is living, but only under the condition that he doesn't sell it, pawn it, or give it away.
She gives a number of relatives bequests of two gold tari, including some aimed explicitly to be used for the recipient's dowry.
Channuna leaves six tari to the synagogue in Sacca.
The witnesses to this will are Jewish.

Description
An account of the resource
Rachila names as her universal heir her daughter Bullara, the wife of Sabuto de Sagictono. She also leaves bequests to her granddaughters Sutayla and Perna (daughters of her late son Muxa de Chalifi), and to her grandson Sadia (son of her late daughter Gaudiosa). She also leaves oil for the synagogue ("<em>mischita,</em>" as is typical in Sicilian Jewish sources), for the sake of her soul.<br /><br />The will is signed by three Jewish witnesses (signing in Hebrew characters) and four Christian witnesses (signing in Latin characters)
