Description An account of the resource Senna's will exists in two copies from the same notary, and is the oldest known surviving Jewish woman's will from fifteenth-century Florence. Senna, a widow, belonged to a family identified as "da Perugia." At the time of her testating, she lived in Florence. Senna did not seem to have children, or at least, no offspring are mentioned in the will, suggesting that any children that may have been born were no longer alive. Senna names three males as her universal heirs: Jacob son of the late Salomone di Matassia da Perugia (a well-known Florentine Jewish moneylender), his brother David, and their nephew Isaac, son of Samuel. The men are likely Senna's relatives, but certainly identified as "da Perugia." Senna leaves 25 gold florins to the poor, and assigns the task of distribution to Jacob. As was then a strong custom for all residents in Florence, she left in her will a pound for the new church of San Reparata, and another pound for the construction of the city walls. She gave 2 gold florins to a woman living in Verona named Stellucia (called Sara), the daughter of the late Salomone di maestro Emanuele da Perugia. This seems to be her first cousin. To Joseph de Siragusia, her grandson (Channa's son), she leaves a cloth hat. To Ventura, daughter of the late Sadech de Minichi, she bequeaths a blanket and a pair of sheets. Most notably, Stella leaves "dominus" Guglielmo Moncata, her son, two tarì, but beyond this she explicitly denies him any other rights to inheritance. This Guglielmo Moncata is the famed Sicilian humanist born Samuel, who converted to Christianity around 1470, and is also known as Flavius Mithridates. She identifies herself as twice a widow, first the widow of Salomon Salon from Perpignan, and then Isaac de Piera of Girona. She has two children: a daughter Margarita, with her first husband, who is now Catholic; and a son, Vidal, with her second husband, who remained Jewish. The will contains a long preface referencing Jewish themes through the lens of God's great acts: the will is written in the name God, the creator who created from nothing using words; who had Noah build the ark; who blessed Abraham; who brought his people across the Red Sea; who sustained them in the desert for forty years; who gave His law to Moses on Mount Sinai; who freed Shadrac, Mesach, and Abednego from the fiery furnace (Daniel ch. 3); and who saved Daniel from the lion's den. Estelina names as her executor (albacea) her son Vidal de Piera (shared with her second husband), and in a long set of boilerplate, Vidal is granted extensive power over her estate. She gives instructions to be buried in the Jewish cemetery of Girona, and leaves 50 sous to charity for the sake of her soul, with the recipients to be chosen by her executor/son. She then gives a bequest of another 50 sous to her daughter Margarita, whom she shared with her first husband, Salomon. She also recounts moneys already given to Margarita upon her own first marriage (Margarita was married, widowed, and remarried), and given to Margarita for the dowries of Margarita's daughters Catalina and Margarita, both now married and living in Perpignan. She leaves 5 sous to each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who are alive at the time of Estelina's death. A fascinating clause appears here, noting that she desires most of all that her children, "Margarita, my daughter, Christian" and "Vida de Piera, Jew, my son and heir" treat each other well, getting along in peace, union, and good love, avoiding all difference, question, and quarrel. Estelina next turns to her residence and other goods and moneys, noting that her wealth has greatly decreased in light of recent war, an apparent reference to a civil war that took place the year before she testated. She and her husband had been married as Jews, and then converted, as evinced in the husband's will. (See Planas Marcé, 656 for more on this.) Blanca's husband came from a well-know Jewish family that had been in Girona for a long time. Blanca, her late husband, and four of her children (sons Pere and Antonio, and daughters Elionor and Violante) identified as Catholic. One son, David (likely the oldest child), is identified in her will as Jewish. This fact, and the ready recognition of his Jewishness, is striking. She testated while very sick and expecting death in the spring of 1437. Blanca names her late husband's relatives and her son Pere as her executors, and leaves 150 Aragonese gold florins for her minor daughter Elionor, to be paid out when she marries. Elionor is also promised food and other necessities from her mother's estate; it is clear that Blanca is particularly concerned for the well-being of this still-young child. Both her Jewish son David and her Catholic son Antonio receive 20 Aragonese florins. A married daughter, Violante, get 10 Aragonese florins. She leaves her grandchildren 5 sous each. Blanca's son Pere is named the universal heir. As a practicing Catholic, she orders that she be buried in a convent cemetery and leaves 20 sous for masses to be said for her soul. Title A name given to the resource Sara, widow of Davi of Cabestany: Perpignan, 1286 Subject The topic of the resource Sara, widow of Davi of Cabestany Description An account of the resource Sara married Davi of Cabestany, a major moneylender of Perpignan, and together seem to have had three sons: Mosee, Bonsenyor, and Profet. Davi predeceased her. In her will, she leaves nothing to her sons, since ostensibly they had already been taken care of in their father's will. Instead, in addition to some bequests to relatives and friends, she leaves nearly her entire estate to charity: specifically, to the education of poor Jewish children and to the dowries of poor Jewish girls. Nevertheless, the education of Jewish children in the region is expressly meant to also support the studies of her potential descendants. She funds this through the revenue from real estate she owns, houses that had been given to her by her father. She leaves 500 sous to her minor nephews (the three sons of her brother) with the condition that the money be loaned at interest during the brother's lifetime, and that the interest go to her brother (with the principal ostensibly going to the nephews upon their father's death). Sara names God her universal heir, which practically means that the remainder of her estate should be given to poor Jewish girls' dowries. Seven Christians are witnesses to the will. Title A name given to the resource Fermosa, the widow of Juce Axevili: Zaragoza, 1418 Subject The topic of the resource Fermosa, née Macho, widow of Juce Azevili Description An account of the resource Living life in Zaragoza, Fermosa and her husband had two children, a daughter named Astruga who predeceased her, and a son named Acach who converted to Christianity and became known as Juan de Embun. Astruga left a daughter, Merian. Merian would be named Fermosa's executor (here: espondalera; spondalera) and universal heir in her will. Fermosa begins her will by revoking all previous testaments or codicils she had made. She asks to be buried in the Jewish cemetery. She gives Merian, her granddaughter, the power to decide how much to give as charity, i.e. gifts for Fermosa's soul. Fermosa also leaves an amount "por legitima" (a phrase that tends to mean "enough to fill my statutory requirements") to her now-Christian son, and also leaves the same amount to her brothers, one who had become Christian, and one who remained Jewish. The rest she leaves to Merian. The wills expresses Fermosa's fear that her son would try to grab Merian's inheritance. In such a case, Fermosa orders that her son Juan must pay Merian 400 sueldos, noting that Merian had spent the last three years of her life caring for Fermosa during Fermosa's illness. Fermosa made her will on the same day in the same town as another testator, Tolosana de la Caballeria, though they used different notaries. On the same day that Fermosa made her will, she also used the same notary to contract a sale which appears immediately after the will in the notary's records: she sells 500 sueldos worth of moveable goods to Merian, in return for Merian's care for her during the last four years. Title A name given to the resource Tolosana, widow of Benvenist de la Caballeria: Zaragoza, 1418 Subject The topic of the resource Tolosana, widow of Benvenist de la Caballeria Description An account of the resource Tolosana was a member of the de la Caballeria family, a wealthy and prestigious Zaragozan family, and married a relative named Benvenist, who was a financier to two Aragonese kings. Together they had seven children (two boys, five girls). Five of these children (two boys, three girls) converted to Christianity. Tolosana became a widow in 1411, and continued the family business. She make her will seven years later, in 1418. The will is quite long and detailed, reflecting her wealth and very specific wishes. In her will, Tolosana made the unusual (and un-halakhic) claim that she was physically healthy upon testating. She explicitly notes that her goal in testating is to avoid the tension between her Jewish and Christian children as regards their inheritance. She leaves her Christian and Jewish sons and daughters equal gendered inheritances despite their religious affiliation, and speaks of the "zelo de amor maternal" she feels for her Christian sons. These two sons receive the significant bulk of the estate. Tolosana's dedication to her Judaism and Jewish community is reflected in the will. She leaves money to Jewish confraternities, for example. She also left money to "rabbis called hazzanim." She paid for poor Jews to function as public mourners for her (giving them both cash and black cloth to wear as mourning clothing). She also makes sure that her household servants get paid upon her death. A fascinating addition to the will is a note, before the witness list, attesting that her sons approve and support the will and will not counter any of the conditions she makes in support of the Jewish community. Three of them remained Jewish (Juce, Acach, and Azmel), while one (Solomon-cum-Salvador) chose baptism and became Christian. In her will, Jamila left all four sons the amount stipulated for all legitimate sons -- 20 sueldos. Beyond that, she gave the Christian son (Solomon/Salvador) 380 sueldos, which he needed to get from repayment of debts that were owed to his mother. She then divided her remaining assets among the three Jewish children. As Blasco Martínez points out (see "Mujeres judías," 85), we do not know the total value of the estate, so we cannot know exactly how much Salvador received in comparison to his brothers. But we can likely guess that the estate left the Jewish brothers considerably more than the converted brother. Moreover, it is notable that Salvador's lump sum had to be recovered from his mother's debtors. Other documentary evidence suggests that Jamila died sometime before 14 January 1403. Title A name given to the resource Reyna, widow of Juce Abenardut: Zaragoza, 1470 Subject The topic of the resource Reyna, widow of Juce Abenardut Description An account of the resource Reyna was married to the physician Juce Abenardut, and had three daughters with him. The Abenardut family was a famous medical family in Aragon. Juce had predeceased Reyna, and had named her his universal heir in his (undated) will. In her own will, Reyna left 500 sueldos to her daughters, Duenya, Mira, and Bonadona, to be evenly divided among them, for the sake of her soul. She also left them each 10 sueldos to comply with Aragonese estate law. She also left to her daughter Duenya the houses where the family lived, in recognition of her son-in-law (Duenya's husband Noha Chiniello) and "los servicios, honras e buenos merecimientos" he had shown his mother-in-law (Marín Padilla, "Ultimas voluntades," 504). Noha also received most of Reyna's library of books. We can imagine that these were the medical books that had belonged to her husband, the physician, and now went to Noha, also a doctor. Books of a certain worth, however, went to a grandson, Mosse Alazar. The rest of her goods (examples of which are listed) were to be divided equally among her universal heirs, constituting her three daughters and a grandson, Vidal Chinillo. "Our Lord God" (nuestro senyor Dios) is named among her executors. Reyna details a great deal of specific material culture in this will. She and her husband had three sons, and lived in Pamplona. She lived there until, widowed, she moved to Zaragoza to live with one of her sons. Two of the three sons converted to Christianity, but the son she lived with was the one who remained Jewish. She left small bequests to all three of her sons, as per Aragonese statute. Her son Acach, who remained Jewish, received the bulk of her estate. She left 80 sueldos to Acach as repayment for the fact that he had brought her to Zaragoza and housed and clothed her for the previous 18 years. She also ordered that all of the rest of her assets be sold and the money given to Acach. It seems that Duenya had fairly meager moveable assets, as is also reflected in the fact that she had been supported by her son for nearly two decades. She did have a "tres colgas plenas de pluma biellas e tres traversas biellas e huna sarga biella." In regards to immoveable assets, she had homes in Pamplona and two seats in the synagogue there. She named non-relatives as her executors. Subject The topic of the resource Martha Dinis, widow of Enrique Pereira Description An account of the resource In 1582, in Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain, Martha Dinis married the licenciado and merchant Enrique Pereira. She was the daughter of the licenciado Paulo Núñez de Vitoria and his wife Isabel Thomas. All of these people were new Christians, natives of Barcelos (Portugal) and descendants of Mestre Thomaz de Vitoria, the last rabbi of that community. She was related to Antonia Saraiva, wife of Antonio Dinis, whose codicil is also in this collection. Convicted by the Inquisition, Martha Dinis died before she could be punished, and was burned in effigy by the Santiago de Compostela Inquisition in 1620. It is very rare to come across such a document as this testament belonging to Martha because usually people condemned by the Inquisition would not have a will.
